Key To Living A Healthy Life: The Heart

How important is the heart? It is extremely important! It not only is good for writing songs of heartbreak about, but is one of the most vital organs of almost every living creature. It pumps blood throughout the body, which delivers oxygen to give the body the ability to function to its maximum capacity. When the heart begins to fail, we begin to fail. This is why it is so vital to have a healthy heart.

What Does The Heart Do?

As most know, the heart is somewhat like a pump containing four chambers. These are called the atria and ventricles. These different parts of the heart act as the intake and the output. The atria receive blood from the body and re-oxygenate it while the ventricles pump the newly oxygenized blood back into the body to be recycled again.

Common Causes of Poor Heart Health

Being one of the most important organs, the heart is extremely sensitive and because of this, there are many risks to the overall health of the heart. These causes include but are not limited to: genetic heart defects, poor diet, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, excessive use of alcohol or caffeine, drug abuse and stress.

These risk factors also contribute to the leading cause of death globally, cardiovascular disease. Conditions that fall within this category of the disease include heart attack, stroke, angina, atherosclerosis (thickening of the arterial walls and narrowing of the arteries), arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) and thrombosis.

Ways To Help The Heart

One of the most important contributors to positive heart health is a healthy diet. You are what you eat as they say. An intake of saturated fat, trans-fats, salts and low intakes of fruits, vegetables, and fish are linked to an increase in cardiovascular disease.

One way to help reduce the amount of unhealthy fats being eaten is by eating fresh. This includes eating more fruits, vegetables, and lean meats. This also means not eating meat every day because it has recently been linked to an increase in cardiovascular disease.

By changing to a cleaner diet, a person can almost guarantee a change in his or her livelihood. Also, think about substituting with vitamins and supplements.
